  • 1 Inversion in condition

    Инверсия в условном предложении
    1) При инверсии вспомогательный глагол в условном придаточном предложении ставится в начало предложения (перед подлежащим), а союз if опускается. Такой порядок слов более характерен для официальной письменной речи.

    Had my father been alive, he would have been proud. — Если б мой отец был жив, он был бы горд.

    The results would be wholly satisfying were it not for the fact that... —- Результаты были бы вполне удовлетворительными, если бы не тот факт, что...

    2) Отрицательные формы глагола при инверсии не сокращаются:

    Had we not (* hadn't we) spent all our money already, we could have gone to Egypt with him. — Если бы мы не потратили все деньги, то могли бы поехать с ним в Египет.
